Review: Beckett Simonon – Cohen Loafer in Oak

I’m slicing up Beckett Simonon’s Cohen loafer to see if it cuts the mustard or goes stale over time.

The Look

Oak-ie dokie, so they look great. The oak colour is a medium brown and is the perfect colour to dress up or dress down. Classic penny loafer design with a round toe that has some remnants of a moccasin toe, but not as pronounced.

The full grain leather upper looks great, there are a few small wrinkles on my shoe, but nothing major and they’ll likely crease nicely with more wear.

Stitching around the shoe looks terrific as well, I couldn’t fault it and since it’s Blake stitched you should be able to resole it fairly easily.

The Cohen also boasts a stepped heel which gives a bit of height to the silhouette but doesn’t look out of place.

The Feel

Let’s start off with sizing, Beckett Simonon’s size chart says if you wear a 10US in Nike & Adidas then a Beckett Simonon 9.5US should be perfect. They’re right, it’s a snug fit, especially across the top of my foot but after the break in it should be quite comfortable – I’ll update this after a few months of wear.

Beckett Simonon also include a pair of cushioned insoles if you need a bit more comfort but I didn’t find the need to insert them.

The full grain leather upper feels what it looks like, it’s not super soft and it’s more supportive than cushiony. This should soften up over time, but it also means that it’s more durable.

The suede portion on the heel tab is a nice addition and should help with break-in and the comfort.

On first wear, the leather sole was quite slippery when walking on tiles, but this is normal with leather soled shoes and the rubber heal cap will help with grip. I’ll report back on grip when I’ve spent more time with them.

Is it Affordable?

Yes, this the Cohen Loafer is worth your pennies. And the amount of pennies you put towards this shoe is actually a lot less than what you would usually be paying. This is because of Beckett Simonon’s Made To Order (MTO) business model. It takes about 3 months to make the shoe from the point of ordering, so you’ll have to be patient. But the results speak for themselves, if you’re not in a rush, these are a great pair of loafers to pick up.
